Executive summary: More than 300 academic publications converted to EPUB 3 in partnership with SciELO Livros, the leading open access platform in Latin America. Tables, footnotes and cross-references preserved in full, as scholarly publishing requires.
The challenge
SciELO Livros is the leading platform for open access academic publishing in Latin America. Its catalogue comes from many different university presses and research institutions, each with its own editorial conventions. The works carry complex tables, dense footnotes, cross-references and indexes, all of which have to be reproduced with absolute bibliographic precision, or the citability and scholarly integrity of the content is compromised.
Our approach
Academic conversion workflows with explicit structural preservation: semantic tables (<thead>, <th scope>, <caption>), notes using epub:type="noteref" and epub:type="footnote", cross-references as internal links, and navigable indexes. For open access, every EPUB carries complete metadata so the work can be found in global repositories.
Result
More than 300 publications converted, widening the reach of Brazilian and Latin American research. Researchers and students anywhere in the world can read the content on tablets, e-readers and desktops, which reinforces the mission of open knowledge at the heart of SciELO.
