Beyond the page: the digital journey of Editora Foco

Amazon Reflowable EPUB Legal

Executive summary: More than 800 legal titles from Editora Foco converted to reflowable EPUB 3 and Amazon KF8/KPF, on a monthly delivery cycle synchronised with the print release. Segment: law (Brazilian bar exam, law-school entrance exams and public-sector competitive exams).

The challenge

Editora Foco is one of the leading legal publishers in Brazil, with a catalogue aimed at law students and professionals preparing for the bar exam, law-school entrance exams and public-sector competitive exams. The books are technically demanding: hundreds of footnotes per title, cross-references to legislation, comparative tables of statutes, and complex formatting that has to keep working on e-readers and on Kindle. On top of that comes a strict monthly schedule that tracks the print releases.

Our approach

We built a production flow dedicated to legal content, with exact footnote handling, automated generation of interactive tables of contents, and double validation (EPUBCheck plus Kindle Previewer) before delivery. The monthly cadence was agreed in the contract and made to work through a reproducible pipeline, so every release could go out in print and digital at the same time.

Result

More than 800 legal titles converted over the course of the partnership, with Editora Foco reaching leading positions in Amazon's legal categories. Print and digital stayed simultaneous on 100% of the releases in the period, closing the gap between the physical and the digital publication.

Technical stack

  • Reflowable EPUB 3 following the W3C EPUB 3.3 specification.
  • Amazon KF8/KPF for publishing through KDP.
  • Validated with EPUBCheck 5.x.
  • Rendering checked in Kindle Previewer and Thorium Reader.
  • Interactive table of contents (NAV) and footnotes using epub:type="noteref" and epub:type="footnote".
