Frequently asked questions
Questions about our services
What is the difference between reflowable EPUB 3 and fixed-layout EPUB 3?
Reflowable EPUB 3 adapts the text to each device's screen size, which suits continuous-text books. Fixed layout (FXL) preserves the exact design of the page, which is essential for illustrated, children's and educational books where the visual composition is part of the content.
How does the EPUB conversion process work at Booknando?
We receive the original file (InDesign, Word or PDF), review the technical and accessibility requirements, produce the EPUB with semantic HTML5 markup, validate it against the EPUB 3 and WCAG standards, and deliver it with a quality report. The average turnaround is 5 to 15 business days depending on the volume.
Does Booknando meet the technical requirements of the PNLD programme?
Yes. We specialise in PNLD Digital. Our service covers every requirement in the Brazilian Ministry of Education's call for tender: EPUB 3 structure, WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility, Dublin Core metadata, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility and EPUBCheck validation.
Do you do audio description of images?
Yes. We offer a complete service of audio description and alternative text for images, charts, tables and infographics in digital books, supported by our own tool, Booknando Scribe, which uses AI to speed the process up.
Is there a minimum volume to commission your services?
There is no required minimum. We work with independent publishers bringing a single title and with large publishers sending hundreds of titles a month. For ongoing work we offer partnership contracts on special terms.
Which source file formats do you accept?
We work with InDesign files (.indd/.idml), Word (.docx), PDF and even printed material (digitized with OCR). The ideal source is the original InDesign file, which speeds the conversion up. If all you have is a PDF, we can still get excellent results.
Does Booknando do page layout or copy-editing?
No. We focus exclusively on the conversion and accessibility of digital content. Print layout, proofreading, cover design and store distribution need to be arranged before the conversion stage. Keeping that boundary is what lets us deliver the highest quality in what we do best.
Do you sign non-disclosure agreements?
Yes. We often work with unpublished works and sensitive content. Files are accessible only to the team working on them, stored in a secure environment, and deleted once the project is finished. We sign NDAs whenever asked.
What happens if something is wrong with the conversion?
We carry out a full technical review with testing in several reading apps (Kindle Previewer, Adobe Digital Editions, Thorium Reader) and validation with EPUBCheck. If a problem comes to light after delivery, we fix it at no extra cost within 4 business days, as long as it falls within the agreed scope.
